Following Network Rail's £20 million upgrade to the Central Belt's North Clyde Line, the Royal Dornoch Gondola Company (RDGC) has proposed a constructive partnership between national rail and aerial cable transport. Because the Far North Line historically bypassed Dornoch, RDGC is not looking to replace ScotRail but to act as a "last-mile" solution for the thirty miles of Sutherland coast that steel rails cannot economically serve.

Proposed Integration

• The Cable Route: Tain – Dornoch – Embo – Dunrobin – Golspie – Brora.
• Tain Interchange: Establishing a joint gondola-rail terminal at Tain station to turn a dead-end stop into a gateway for Dornoch, Royal Dornoch Golf Club, Skibo, Dunrobin Castle, and Brora.
• Rail Improvements: Recommends upgrading Far North Line loops and signaling to prevent routine closures like those in April 2026 (news-3215951).

RDGC highlights its existing heritage cooperation via the Greasing Pit Agreement with the Dornoch Light Railway (news-3214791), reusing abandoned easement between Embo and Dornoch.
